It was once regarded as an art. It was taught and people would be complimented on it. Back then it was called penmanship, but it is now better known as handwriting. In addition to the change in name, there has been a significant decrease in its quality. The once high standard of handwriting has become so poor that a growing number of pupils’ exam papers are becoming impossible to read. On account of this increase, teachers are now calling for an even greater use of word processors for examination candidates. Apart from poor handwriting, there is another problem exam candidates encounter. For some pupils, writing quickly to finish their exam papers is like pulling teeth. Consequently, pupils who are unable to write ten words a minute can use a scribe, someone who writes exactly what the pupil says. A similar increase to the one seen in the use of word processors has been observed with scribes. While word processors and scribes have made the examiner’s job easier, there has been opposition to their use. Critics claim that instead of allowing pupils to do away with doing their own writing, they should be taught to write properly through greater emphasis being put on handwriting in the classroom. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50. The word rivalry brings to mind images of enemies fighting it out to the death but it doesn’t need to be that way. Rivalry can be really beneficial. It can push you to work harder and drive you to achieve things you couldn’t imagine that you could achieve. At school, a rival might challenge you to achieve higher grades. In business, it certainly pushes companies to be more creative and more innovative, both vital for continued success. A rival can also hold a mirror up to you and show you both your strengths and your weaknesses. The rival makes you think about what you do well and therefore what you need to continue doing. They also show you what you do less well and what you need to work on. None of us like to know about the things we’re not good at, but we do need to understand our weaknesses to be able to make the necessary improvements to become even stronger and more successful. Of course, a rival is not just someone we work with, study with or compete against on the sports field. It’s not even someone we loathe. A rival is someone we may respect very much, but about whom we’re unable to be objective. Our rivalry becomes personal because we want to win so much. It could be another student whose grades are as good as ours or a colleague who wants the same promotion as us. Without doubt, rivalry has its downsides, too. Our desperation to beat our rival can cause us to lie or cheat to get what we want. There are cases of businesses who try to sabotage the success of a competitor by spreading false information, for example. While their actions may not exactly be illegal, they’re certainly immoral. We need to be sure that we don’t go down the route of negative actions. Another possible side effect of rivalry is the fact that we can be so focused on our rival that we don’t see other competitors close behind us. So, we should always pay attention to that new runner in the race, employee at work or student in the class because we never know when they might step up and beat us.
