LÝ THUYẾT A. BARE INFINITIVES ( INFINITIVES WITHOUT TO) *V(bare) (động từ nguyên mẫu không to) được dùng trong những trường hợp sau: 1. Sau các trợ động từ ( do / don’t /does /doesn’t /did /didn’t +Vbare Ex: She doesn’t know where to go 2. Sau động từ khiếm khuyết: can, could, should, would ,may, might, will, must, have to, ought to,had better .+Vbare Ex: I must speak to manager You should go to bed early. 3.Sau make/let /help + O+ Vbare (chú ý: be made + to V-inf) Ex : He made me cry I was made to clean my room My brother helped me do my homework. 4.Sau would rather+V bare . Would rather +Vbare+than +Vbare. Ex: I would rather work than play. 5.Sau used to nói về thói quen trong quá khứ . Ex: I used to eat ice cream when I was a child . 6.Sau các động từ chỉ tri giác: hear, smell, taste, feel, watch, notice, see, listen, find ,observe + O + Vbare (chỉ sự hoàn tất của hành động – nghe hoặc thấy toàn bộ sự việc diễn ra). Ex 1: I saw her get off the bus. 7.Trong câu mệnh lệnh , yêu cầu người khác làm gì . + V bare / Don’t +V bare Ex: Close the door,please! 8. Sau have +O -người +Vbare: (nhờ, bảo ai làm gì ) Ex: I have the mechanic repair my bike B. TO INFINITIVES( INFINITIVES WITH TO) 1. ĐỨNG ĐẦU CÂU LÀM CHỦ NGỮ eg: To save money now is necessary 2. ĐỨNG SAU ĐỘNG TỪ TO BE LÀM BỔ NGỮ Eg: Our duty is to study harder 3. ADJECTIVES + TO INFINITIVE 5.1 Noun/Pronoun + be + adj + to V Examples I am eager to see his family determined grateful happy sad surprised amused annoyed astonished certain delighted Anxious shocked afraid lucky Eager sorry terrified frightened Pleased bound Ready disappointed reluctant glad amazed ashamed eligible 5.2. It’s + adj + to V = To V + is+ adj Examples It is easy to learn English = To learn EL is easy difficult nice great safe good (im)possible likely necessary necessary useful Difficult Boring Dangerous Hard Easy Common Usual Strange wonderful interesting (Un)able 5.3. It is + adj + of somebody + to V right, wrong, nice, kind, clever, intelligent, silly, stupid Examples: It is kind of you to help me. 5.4. TOO/ENOUGH + TO V *S + V+ too + adj/ adv+ to V *S + V+ adj/ adv + enough + to V Eg: I am too tired to get up The coffee is not warm enough for me to drink = The coffee is too hot for me to drink 9. NOUN + TO INFINITIVE ( replace a relative clause) - Have something to do: có cái gì cần phải làm - There be Sth to do: có cái gì cần phải làm Eg: I have some letters to write Eg: There are some exercises to do. 10. PHRASAL VERBS + V-ING: (sau một số cụm động từ) carry on end up be against Dream of set about keep on be opposed to Agree with give up care for face up to Focus on put off see about look forward to Rely on Be fed up with Be afraid of be interested in Succeed in Be tired of be/get used to Be accustomed to Insist on concentrate on Think of . * Cụm giới từ theo sau bởi V-ing: be excited/ worried about V-ing complain keep (someone) dream about/ of + V-ing prevent (someone) from V-ing talk stop (someone) think apologize believe blame (someone) be interested in V-ing forgive (someone) for V-ing succeed be responsible thank (someone) be tired of V-ing in addition be waste look forward to V-ing Eg: I get used to getting up early. 5. VERBS + O/TÍNH TỪ SỞ HỮU + V-ING appreciate, detest, (dis)approve of, (dis)like, hate, love, object to, forget, imagine, remember, think of, resent, recall Examples I appreciate him looking after me so well. I appreciate his looking after me so well. Những động từ hay gặp là E.g: The storm prevented us from going camping. 6. VERBS+ O + GIỚI TỪ+ V-ING - deter, discourage, keep, prevent, prohibit, stop + O+ from+ V-ing 4
- - accuse sb of (buộc tội ai) - criticize sb for (chỉ trích ai) - apologize sb for (xin lỗi ai) -praise sb for (khen ngợi ai) - admire sb for (ngưỡng mộ ai) -thank sb for (cảm ơn ai) - blame sb for (đổ lỗi cho ai) -suspect sb of (nghi ngờ ai) - Congratulate sb on(chúc mừng ai) - warn sb against E.g: The police blamed him for cutting down the oldest tree in the park. E.g: The storm prevented us from going camping. 7. PHRASES + V-ING - It’s no use / good (chẳng ích gì) - have / difficulty / trouble - There’s no point (in) - be worth / busy - can’t help / resist (không thể không) - a waste of time / money - can’t bear / stand (không chịu được) - a hard / good / difficult time - have fun/ a good time Eg: I can’t help laughing. It’s a waste of time playing video games. D. OTHER CASES: BOTH TO V AND V-ING Một số động từ có thể đi cùng với cả động từ nguyên thể có "to" và V-ing, nhưng có sự khác nhau về ý nghĩa: 1. Stop V-ing: dừng làm gì (dừng hẳn việc đang làm) Stop to V: dừng lại để làm việc gì 2. Remember/forget/regret to V: nhớ/quên/tiếc sẽ phải làm gì (ở hiện tại - tương lai) Remember/forget/regret V-ing: nhớ/quên/hối hận đã làm gì (ở quá khứ) E.g: I regret to inform you that the train was cancelled. She remembers seeing him. 3. Try to V: cố gắng làm gì Try V-ing: thử làm gì E.g: I try to pass the exam. You should try wearing this hat. 4. Prefer V-ing to V-ing Prefer + to V + rather than (V) E.g: I prefer staying at home to going out. - I prefer to stay at home rather than go out. 5. Mean to V: Có ý định làm gì. Mean V-ing: Có nghĩa là gì. E.g: He doesn't mean to prevent you from doing that. This sign means not going into. 6. Need to V: cần làm gì Need V-ing =need to be done :cần được làm gì ( mang nghĩa bị động) E.g: I need to clean the house. Your hair needs cutting. (= Your hair needs to be cut.) 7. Used to V: đã từng/thường làm gì trong quá khứ (bây giờ không làm nữa) Be/Get used to V-ing: quen với việc gì (ở hiện tại) E.g: I used to get up early when I was young. I'm used to getting up early. 8. Advise/ recommend /allow/permit + O + to V: khuyên/cho phép ai làm gì. Advise/ recommend /allow/permit + V-ing: khuyên/cho phép làm gì. E.g: They don't allow us to go out. - They don't allow going out. - We are allowed to go out. (bị động) II. BÀI TẬP VẬN DỤNG 5
